2012 NFL Playoff Preview: Wildcard Saturday Picks

It’s playoff time! The single elimination tournament to crown a NFL Champion is here already with the wildcard round starting this Saturday.  In the preseason I choose the Packers over the Patriots in the Super Bowl, but today I would pick the Ravens instead of the Patriots and keep the Packers over the Saints although their balance could be the difference.

Here’s a preview of the games and my picks.  New post for Sunday’s games.

Bengals @ Texans

  • I’m expecting a low scoring game between these two tough defensive teams.  Young quarterbacks will hold the offenses back but will always help determine the winner.  I favor Dalton over Yates, but both teams will try to minimize their QBs.  Advantage goes to the Texans in the backfield with all-world Arian Foster and Ben “the bruiser” Tate, who became the 7th teammates in history to gain over 1000 yards each.  Houston is rightfully favored as they are strong at home, but will need a strong performance from Owen Daniels and Andre Johnson against a beatable secondary.  Coaching is about 50/50, and see this one coming down to the fourth quarterback and wouldn’t be surprised if it went either way.
    • Prediction: 19-17 Texans

Lions @ Saints

  • The Saints have been unstoppable at home offensively.  Detroit will have gotten back 3 crucial starters since their last matchup, I still don’t think it will be enough.  Jimmy Graham is a matchup nightmare for anyone, as is Sproles, and Colston is hitting his stride at the right time.  The Lions does have Calvin Johnson and the rocket arm of Matt Stafford to keep them in it.  It seems like they’ve shaken off their poor play in the first half, which doomed them in the first meeting, and will need to get off to a good start or their efforts could prove to be futile.  Suh and Fairley, must collapse the inside of the pocket, Brees is the most deadly when he is able to scan the field and step up in the throws/space.
    • Prediction: Saints 41-31
