2011 NFL Preseason: Quick Slants – Panthers Giants
Cam Newton looks the part and has the tools to become a success: The other night the comparison to McNabb never seemed more true. He showed surprising poise, his rifle arm, and that he needs more work. Threw a couple off his back foot and needs to learn at this level that his arm will not bail him out…let alone his size and speed. Nevertheless, that arm is gifted and his talent unique. I’m guessing he starts from Week One and I really like this offense that they are designing for him given their personnel.
Reunited OL did just fine: Back suffering a ton of injuries last year, the OL was back together and was working well together. Considering it was their first game action, I was impressed with the zone blocking and pass protection…except when Clausen held onto the ball too long and was sacked by by Jason Pierre-Paul (one time throwing Jordan Gross aside). I was interested to see how the Giants D would perform as most starters played and Carolina did a good job of putting bodies on them (for the most part).
New York Giants
Eli looked worse for the wear: Eli Manning, coming off one of his worst seasons, looked shaky from the start. Throwing inaccurately a few times and not showing much confidence. Second year pro and 2010 preseason standout Cruz dropped a slant and didn’t get much of an opportunity early on as they played with 2 WRs. Nicks was targeted a ton and is rightly considered a top fantasy football WR this year.
Running Game: As per the usual, they are led by two backs: Bradshaw and Jacobs. Bradshaw was re-signed after he was productive as the lead back in 2010 and stayed healthy. Jacobs had a surprisingly high YPC last year and looked good during his run. I think the Giants try to recommit to run and take the pressure off Eli, especially with Smith and Boss gone. Although there’s been some re-shuffling of the offensive line. Da’Rel Scott only got 2 carries.
