2011 NFL Preseason: Quick Slants – Cowboys Broncos

Dallas Cowboys

This could be Felix Jones’ year:  He’s healthy, the unanimous number one, and is expected to have a lot of open opportunities with Miles & Dez on the outside + Witten.  He looked explosive versus the Broncos both running inside and catching a screen pass as well as blocking. Garrett used him well last year and has unquestionable speed. Jerry is giving his fellow Hog alum every opportunity and this could be the year.

Defense showed new looks, but old tendencies:  To cover up for the secondary Rob Ryan will have to come up with different looks and blitzes to get pressure.  The Broncos marched down the field on the ground, although they got good pressure on dropbacks.

Denver Broncos

Knowshon Moreno & Willis MaGahee: Rotated with the first team.  I think Willis has a chance to produce some good numbers returning to the zone scheme.  He is a tough and decisive runner, something the Broncos need with a sub-par offensive line.  He showed nice cutback ability and finished his runs.  Meanwhile, Moreno has been very disappointing after being selected in the first round.  Although he is a good receiver and has good quicks, he’s injury prone and not great up the middle.   I just want to emphasize the upside of Willis.

Decker makes one catch…while Royal watches:  According reports at Broncos camp, Royal has been thriving in Fox’s offense.  Decker is behind him on the depth chart and not taking full advantage, even though he looked like Ed McCaffery on his catch from the slot the other night.  Not materializing as a sleeper.

Tebow still needs time, but with the output not so bright it’s a question of when.  He’ll continue to improve, don’t doubt em, intangibles count.  I think he could work himself into a winning QB although never elite.
